First Ian Kennedy picks up where he left off during his last stint in the bigs by getting shelled by the Angels. Then Dan Giese comes back and pitches a nice game going 6 innings giving up only 1 run only to have his bullpen give up 10 runs in an 11-4 loss. The Yankees just can not get themselves together against the Angels.
Frustrating weekend for Bombers fans as the last hope now is to win the finale and try to stay in a pennant race where they now trail the Red Sox by 4 games and the Rays by 7. More frustrating is the off field drama around Ian Kennedy's comments after his loss of Friday night when he said he was "just not real upset" about his performance. Joe Girardi disagreed, insisting that Kennedy was indeed upset about his performance saying, "Some guys understand how to handle the media a little bit better than
others. When you play in New York, not only is it a
learning process on how to play in New York, I think it's also a
learning process on how to say exactly what you mean." Girardi met with Kennedy today about his comments and of course his lackluster start where he allowed 9 hits and 5 runs over 2 innings.
The bottom line is Kennedy just does not seem to be ready to pitch at the big league level. He is lights out in the minors but can not seem to make the jump. I wonder if he may be better served in a role in the bullpen for the rest of 2008. He could get some big league experience with less pressure and if the Yankees are lucky, he may be able to contribute like Joba Chamberlain did.
Tomorrow is a must win for the Bronx Bombers. They can not afford to fall out of the race any further!
